Remember how we covered Adobe’s AI (AIm-Bot, if you will) and their new Terms of Service that state they have access and permission to scan your art for their machine last week?
Yeah…about that.
The Department of Justice has confirmed that they are seeking legal action against the artistic program company regarding their subscription cancellation process- that is, how impossible it is to close the account and not keep paying every month. This isn’t the first company to have such convoluted methods regarding their services, but you’d think they’d have learned. Leave it to another tech company to make their already expensive software unreasonably difficult to unsubscribe to.
That’s on top of the fact that, for every month you’re subscribed and utilize the programs, your work is being added to the AI database.
To add to that as well, the Terms of Service also have a sneaky “Early Termination Fee” (their words, not mine) to make you shell out even more money. What is this, a lease? Am I trying to move out? I’m trying to get them to move out.
This makes me respect other art programs like Clip Studio more, where you can have a modern, consistently-updated version through a subscription service, but you can also purchase one of their legacy editions and just…own it. Forever. Like back in the old days.
This will likely not go to trial for several years–if at all, should they settle out-of-court- so I wouldn’t hold my breath on anything. If you’re trying to unsubscribe, I wish you luck.
For the cost of some of these subscriptions, I could buy premium art supplies and still have enough for gas and a snack. Guess it really is cheaper to pay out the lawsuits than to prevent the legal recourse.
