    AI is Already Here

There have been many reports, talks, announcements, and job listings regarding A.I. in technology and gaming industries, but a recent report by Wired has argued that it’s already here; with testimonies from people impacted by the changes. The hosts were passionate–if torn–by the use of A.I. This also showed in the chat, where the audience typed their views and opinions as the hosts passed the potato, so to speak (ignore BlackLightOni eating a sweet potato on-stream.)

For the sake of clarity, the Wired article focused on people who had lost jobs, lost coworkers, or the numbers of companies who eliminated departments to be replaced by A.I. This seemed most prevalent for concept artists, where some companies want to have concept art generated by A.I. and overseen by a few artists. Advertisements from companies such as Wizards of the Coast have multiple listings for A.I.-related jobs, so this certainly tracks.

Chieftain would love to see it as a tool–emphasis on tool–to assist in art and design, such as in animation sequences, cycles, and general clean-up. Like many tools in a professional’s kit, this would save time and could very well be fine-tuned to each developer’s style and technique without sacrificing quality. He’s used it to expand a slide from our show (the slide advertising Soda and Mariner’s Baldur’s Gate 3 run with Wyll Ravenguard on it) and was pleased with the results. The accuracy was spot-on and could be modified further. His first foray went a little awry, so he was very glad this one went much better.

Soda has changed his opinion as time has passed. Originally, he was against it–and he is SkyNet. The idea of finding shortcuts isn’t bad unless quality and skill are thrown out the window, which seems to have happened more often than not. Now, though, Soda is liking the idea of A.I. Being able to delegate simple tasks to a program while you do more detailed, complex work would make you more efficient and, with some fine-tuning, could become a form of quality control. Like Chieftain, A.I. as a tool could be a great addition if implemented correctly.

Hiro has used A.I. in his field to experiment and his opinion was similar. It can certainly compute and generate, but it cannot discern. It is only as good as its programing, so you’d better be double-checking it. To simply allow A.I. to replace humans regarding work or artistic decisions seems like a cheap way to cut labor costs without actually getting anything done. To quote Hiro, “It might be better for AAA developers, though.”

… the bottom of the barrel, gamers. Bottom of the barrel…

Given how the companies are currently operating, it seems more like a blind attempt to cut costs and maximize dwindling profits. Instead of artists, they want A.I. babysitters. Instead of correcting their deficits, they shutter departments to replace them with technology they barely understand. Even though A.I. art cannot be copyrighted, even though so many companies have gotten in trouble for failing to mention that their “art” was A.I., even though A.I. doesn’t actually create, these companies want so desperately to reclaim their glory days without understanding what made them so respected in the first place.

I think these companies will soon be humbled–several studios have begun to unionize and SAG-AFTRA gaming actors are currently on strike. I believe this is the beginning of their end.

TF2 Respawns’ Comic and Game Interest

Team Fortress 2 fans have been through a lot: Game abandonment; Bot invasions; CP in the chats, and; The comic hiatus. Fans tried for years to request help through, shall we say, proper channels, but Valve ignored them like a bad headcanon. After that, fans decided to get creative.

TF2 had a colorful array of offerings, from animations to comics. The fans devoured this media with glee. Lore, characters, and entire character arcs could be read or viewed away from the battlefield, spawning their own memes, gifs, and quotes that are still adored by gamers. That made the many-year hiatus of the comics and Valve’s silence all the more painful.

Recently, though, there was a breakthrough.

A new page was revealed with Ms. Penny announcing the revenge of TF2, as well as patches and updates to the game, the servers being cleared of the bots and CP (why it took so long for just this is anyone’s guess), and official word from Valve of the legitimacy of the posts. This is both great and terrifying. Obviously, it’s fantastic the fans finally seem to have been heard by the company that made/abandoned/returned to their game, but the nagging thought remains as to why: Is it really for TF2 or are they setting up for the end?

It is too early to know for certain, but maybe we can enjoy this while it lasts.

Blackstone Makes an Offer for InfoCom

Is it racist to go somewhere you aren’t from and impose your beliefs on the native people, or is it spreading moral truths?

    Asking for a friend.

In all seriousness, the infamous company Blackstone, known for a shared past with Blackrock, DEI practices, and apparently private mercenary work, has made an offer to InfoCom, a company in Japan known for owning about half of the manga and anime market. They are certainly not the only interested party, but being non-Japanese and having a reputation that is quite divisive, Blackstone is the one everyone is talking about.

We do not see this as a good thing.

Without bringing up their notorious track record, there’s the huge problem of a company purchasing something and not understanding or respecting the goods or services they provide. Is that inherently wrong? No. That’s business and how a capitalist market works. Does it mean there’s a significant chance that the investment becomes a money pit? Absolutely.

On top of that, manga and anime have their own history that, to this day, have a stigma that many still lean into. The sexualization of young- or seemingly young- characters has an unfortunate history with the sexual history of Japan, some of which is very, very dark.

Do I think that history is good? Hell no- it’s incredibly tragic and has had dire consequences for many, especially women and children as an open secret.

Japan’s conservative philosophies and habits have been a boon and a bane for this reason. Their hesitance to adopt new ideas and beliefs means that homosexuality and protection laws for children have been slow to form, but they also haven’t abandoned traditions and values, such as the family unit and self-improvement.

With that being said, an outside company that doesn’t respect the culture of the place they’re purchasing sounds like a disaster.

    Batman: Caped Crusader Trailer Thoughts

XMen ‘97 was well-received this year and thank goodness–we needed a fucking win!

Goodness gracious, we needed a win…

    Anyways.

To continue our nostalgia ride, the trailer for the upcoming show Batman: Caped Crusader was released and we decided to watch it, especially since someone (Chieftain) is a huge fan.

    What did we think?

Actually, we like the tone. Being produced by Amazon Prime with an art lead from the legendary ‘90s Batman: The Animated Series, it shows. Similar to XMen ‘97, the show has a very ‘90s animation style, but the technological and graphical updates make for clearer, smoother animations and transitions. Chieftain noticed (and named, for those of us not in the know) the 2.5D shading, which we kind of are on the fence about, but it’s a style we can forgive.

The music they chose was great. The trailer really draws you in through dialogue and action, taking us back to the grisly roots of Batman with mobsters and Tommy guns in an Art Deco Gotham City.

No villains were fully shown except for a redesigned (and, according to Hiro, reimagined origin) of Harley Quinn, looking much like the popular porcelain harlequin and pidgin dolls from that era. Though there is certainly some concern, I think cautious optimism is fair here because this show looks like it was made with love and respect.

Though she was the only definitive villain, many hints gave us ideas of who we might see, from the Penguin (DiMaggio is listed as part of the cast- PLEASE DON’T BREAK MY HEART) to Mr. Freeze to, of course, the Joker, who is alleged to be tied to Harley Quinn in that she entices him to crime.

The show launches on August 1st, so we will see if this show lives up to our positive expectations, but they seem to have something great here–but is it the show we want, or the show we deserve?

    Adobe Gets Sued

Remember how we covered Adobe’s AI (AIm-Bot, if you will) and their new Terms of Service that state they have access and permission to scan your art for their machine last week?

    Yeah…about that.

The Department of Justice has confirmed that they are seeking legal action against the artistic program company regarding their subscription cancellation process- that is, how impossible it is to close the account and not keep paying every month. This isn’t the first company to have such convoluted methods regarding their services, but you’d think they’d have learned. Leave it to another tech company to make their already expensive software unreasonably difficult to unsubscribe to.

That’s on top of the fact that, for every month you’re subscribed and utilize the programs, your work is being added to the AI database.

To add to that as well, the Terms of Service also have a sneaky “Early Termination Fee” (their words, not mine) to make you shell out even more money. What is this, a lease? Am I trying to move out? I’m trying to get them to move out.

This makes me respect other art programs like Clip Studio more, where you can have a modern, consistently-updated version through a subscription service, but you can also purchase one of their legacy editions and just…own it. Forever. Like back in the old days.

This will likely not go to trial for several years–if at all, should they settle out-of-court- so I wouldn’t hold my breath on anything. If you’re trying to unsubscribe, I wish you luck.

For the cost of some of these subscriptions, I could buy premium art supplies and still have enough for gas and a snack. Guess it really is cheaper to pay out the lawsuits than to prevent the legal recourse.

Ghoul Times Ahead in Fallout 76

I know I shat on Fallout 76 upon release because (checks notes- PTSD flashback to glitches, Black Friday sale at 74% in the same month as release, doxxing the help-tickets accidently)… right.

    This is different!

Several years have passed and what a change it’s been. With the Amazon show garnering praise from fans and new watchers alike, people have flocked to the Fallout games like ducks to water. Fallout 76 has been labeled as stable and fun (it took a while, but we got there) and has gotten quite the news:

Ghouls are on the table as a player character!

A certain ghoul has certainly brought more popularity to the species, but let’s be honest- even non-Fallout players wanted to play as ghouls. They look cool, have some of the most intriguing stories, and are staples- nay, foundations- in Fallout lore.

This has been a planned update since before the show according to the developers, but the series has certainly helped with the positive attention. It may still be a while until it drops, but we’ve still got a swathe of games available to satiate our ghoulish hunger yet.

    TicketMaster’s Ticket Punched

TiketMaster hasn’t been in the news for anything good and it would seem that trend is only getting worse.

A breach that resulted in 500 million names made the news amidst seurity and data breaches across many other industries, from healthcare to banking to government (I said it). Not mentioning the fact that names and personal information are now floating around who-knows-where, whatever payment options saved to those accounts are probably out there, too.

    So, there’s that.

It’s a shame for customers who actually go out and, you know, do things, like watch sporting events or go to concerts. Summer is upon us and that seems to be when more folks want to go out and enjoy things with like-minded people.

Keep tabs of your accounts and data because we cannot trust companies to do it.

Variety Magazine’s Article on “The State of Gaming”

We here at Laggin’ Out, had a few episodes of “The State of Gaming” to poke fun at the industry and political spheres.

Look, 2020 and the pandemic made us crave more memes. We got bored, we were pent-up; good times.

It seems Variety picked up on the gaming industry (and, fair, it’s been a bit of a chaotic mess) and decided to post their own take on the state of the gaming industry. Chieftain has a subscription to their magazine–with his Visual Effects Society membership–and was gracious enough to let us roast it.

It was about what we expected.

The writing was competent enough, so I appreciate that. The real criticism comes with the way they approached the topic and what they did–and didn’t–elaborate on.

Written with the same tone as someone with no background or interest in video games, the article was very surface-level, with basic information that most anyone can find easily. The focus on gaming layoffs didn’t help because it’s all we hear now. The layoffs being caused by the influx of work before and during the pandemic, with games that tanked because of the DEI regulations not adding anything to the games, and poor quality that was forced down gamers’ throats, was but a footnote.

Way to suck up to the corporations, Variety.

All in all, it was a bland article that misses the mark on the industry and those who partake in the past time.

Alt-Bionics: The Future of Affordable Prosthetics

Laggin’ Out isn’t always the peppiest place on the internet, but we had to share the great news relating to our technologically-driven world.

Alt-Bionics, a start-up that began as a course project, is going live after five years of experimenting, testing, and initial funding. Using modern technologies like 3D printing and medical sensors, Alt Bionics has opened their waitlist for prosthetic hands on their website.

With advertised costs at $600, accessibility and functionality are within reach of more people.

Articulated fingers and wrists grant users more mobility than ever for the price. Sizing can be adjusted to each person, whether adult or child. Children can have better quality prosthetics that can be replaced more easily as they grow.

Alt-Bionics has paved the way for new paths to mobility and independence and we cannot be more impressed and grateful. Everyone who’s had a hand in this journey should feel proud of such a milestone and we cannot wait to hear more from you!

Please check out their social media to hear the story from their mouths:

Vault-Tec and You: Which Vaults are the Hosts Assigned to?

Hey, kids, have you ever wondered what vault you’d live in? Would you make it into the spacious, well-stocked bunkers? Well, The-Honeybadgr did the hard work for us and gathered her list–with details–on each host’s home-sweet-home.

Up first was BlackLightOni, assigned Vault 108; but, instead of dear old Gary, it’s Badgr.

    Only Badgr.

Besides the tom-foolery, someone actually made it sad by throwing in the idea of the clones being synths. But it must be said that Oni would still care for them just the same: With love and lots of written directions.

Next up was Soda-Pop with Vault 13. This was specifically when the Death Claws were intelligent. Of course, Soda brought up the concerns of procreation and if his only options were Death Claws or if there were also humans.

Yes, the conversation devolved into the morality of interbreeding with Death Claws.

Hiro was assigned the hell that is Vault 56, where the entertainment tapes are only of the comic Tom Green, known for “Freddy Got Fingered.”

Needless to say, Vault-Tec did not make this one with Hiro’s comfort in mind. Hiro, in the spirit of “Sharing is Caring,” made sure to elaborate on the…movie. If we weren’t for adult audiences before, let’s just say we earned that rating with his details.

Last but not least was Chieftain. What vault was the thirsty producer of Laggin’ Out assigned?

Vault 68: 999 inhabitants are men with one woman.

I don’t think there’s a more poetic way to wrap this article up, so I propose we enjoy our Nuka Cola and watch the fireworks.
