Campers Vs A.I.

Stream Notes: 12/1/23
COD Takes a Shot with A.I.

For all the talk of Artificial Intelligence, it seems one title is attempting to utilize it for the gaming good. Call of Duty, Chieftain’s FPS of choice, has decided to test out an AI to minimize “campers” and snipers from matches, implementing suspensions and bans for those who are caught.

Chieftain was especially excited because he hates campers. By logging times and patterns of players, the AI will determine if “camping” has occurred and act accordingly. Chieftain is pleased with this decision since he hates players who don’t play COD as intended.

The group had some varying opinions, of course.

Hiro and Soda, though not as big of fans, see the benefit(s), namely in that gamers would play with like-minded gamers and the rounds would run more smoothly. The lifespan of a game- even if it’s COD– is a major concern to keep profits up. The younger players will push boundaries and are a large contingency of gamers, so keeping them online is still a necessity.

“By-The-Hour” play is, suffice to say, an interesting opinion. It makes sense from a business perspective: Maximize profits by charging a subscription-like service for your 40+ hour game. With that being said, completionists, casuals, and die-hards quickly saw that the price would be too steep to continue their pursuits. In this economy, when hobbies are a luxury we try to afford and make time to enjoy, it quickly loses its charm. That’s not to mention that many games hardly seem worth the “regular price” as it is and some games are played for literal decades by fans.

I, however, am less optimistic or forgiving. If you want to prevent people from utilizing weapons and their intended use, why not exclude those weapons? Why not focus on the market you want (and are legally marketed toward)? I think there will also be unforeseen issues with the AI and algorithm that I am far from qualified or intelligent enough to predict.

I guess we’ll see who captures this objective.
