XMen ‘97 was well-received this year and thank goodness–we needed a fucking win!
Goodness gracious, we needed a win…
Anyways.
To continue our nostalgia ride, the trailer for the upcoming show Batman: Caped Crusader was released and we decided to watch it, especially since someone (Chieftain) is a huge fan.
What did we think?
Actually, we like the tone. Being produced by Amazon Prime with an art lead from the legendary ‘90s Batman: The Animated Series, it shows. Similar to XMen ‘97, the show has a very ‘90s animation style, but the technological and graphical updates make for clearer, smoother animations and transitions. Chieftain noticed (and named, for those of us not in the know) the 2.5D shading, which we kind of are on the fence about, but it’s a style we can forgive.
The music they chose was great. The trailer really draws you in through dialogue and action, taking us back to the grisly roots of Batman with mobsters and Tommy guns in an Art Deco Gotham City.
No villains were fully shown except for a redesigned (and, according to Hiro, reimagined origin) of Harley Quinn, looking much like the popular porcelain harlequin and pidgin dolls from that era. Though there is certainly some concern, I think cautious optimism is fair here because this show looks like it was made with love and respect.
Though she was the only definitive villain, many hints gave us ideas of who we might see, from the Penguin (DiMaggio is listed as part of the cast- PLEASE DON’T BREAK MY HEART) to Mr. Freeze to, of course, the Joker, who is alleged to be tied to Harley Quinn in that she entices him to crime.
The show launches on August 1st, so we will see if this show lives up to our positive expectations, but they seem to have something great here–but is it the show we want, or the show we deserve?
