CNN's bad Gamergate take

Show Me Your Consoles, CNN!

First, a side note.

For the past several months Hiro and I have been using a certain website as a source for topics for the Live. Thatparkplace.com–note the absence of link, there’s a reason–was, to us, a fair and balanced source entertainment news. It’s coverage was off mainstream enough that it was giving us stories not found or covered on larger channels. It was also distributing this information free. A fact that is no longer true. Thatparkplace.com now has a paywall in front of some of its more interesting topics, like today’s.

We’re probably going to be moving away from using Thatparkplace.com as a source…that’s why no link…unless our esteemed readers like what it’s given us. Please let us know in the comments and we’ll discuss doing something about it.

Anyway, on to the main event.

The part of the Thatparkplace.com article that isn’t paywalled merely mentions how CNN is rewriting the narrative of Gamergate. It takes what was a call for journalistic integrity and media transparency and morphs it into a weird playbook the “far-right” uses to promote future conspiracy theories. This take comes out of a book written by a feminist scholar…need I say more.

To be transparent, I didn’t know anything about Gamergate. I’ve heard the term bandied about, I’ve heard the bad takes, but it took a little research to find a good take. I found this Digiday article from back in the day when it was all happening live on the internet–after scrolling past some more recent “coverage.”

The CNN article even goes so far as to say that the Gamergate “playbook” guided future conspiracies, such as Pizzagate (what’s that?) and QAnon (??). These, to be clear, are not-to-be-taken-seriously conspiracy theories created by internet “sleuths.” They were then glommed onto by the left and exploited against, applied to, and used for discrediting rational people expressing their dissatisfaction and resistance to the left’s own agendas.

You can see now why CNN is now doing the same this with Gamergate…it’s their “origin story” for the devil they see as the cause of their downfall. It’s completely wrong, of course, and obviously, none of them are gamers. The left has their own conspiracy theories, it seems. “Everything is a Gamergate!” (read: far-right conspiracy) “Ignore our legit, provable conspiracies and look at these unprovable ones!”
