AI Helped. The Dinosaurs Would Disagree.

You lose your gear in a game, look up a fix, and follow the instructions. Pretty ordinary evening. Then every dinosaur is nuked from the server.

This week’s Halloween edition of LagginOut included a story about Hololive’s Shirakami Fubuki turning to AI search for help with an Ark inventory problem. According to the account discussed on the show, the suggested command wiped both tamed and wild dinosaurs from the server. That’s a fairly aggressive interpretation of “help me get my stuff back.”

Kaori explained that Fubuki warned the other players to stay off the server and contacted Wildcard for assistance. A rollback reportedly restored an earlier save, although that still meant losing progress made since the backup.

Everyone found the whole image of a fox-themed VTuber accidentally causing a dinosaur extinction pretty funny. Fair enough. I imagine the other players became considerably more amused once they knew their dinosaurs were coming back.

Underneath the absurdity was a familiar problem. AI can produce instructions that sound perfectly reasonable, and a command can do exactly what it was written to do while being completely wrong for your situation. Having permission to run it makes that distinction rather important.

Hiro’s point was that AI still needs someone checking its work. The panel also questioned why the original inventory bug remained a problem and how much access players should have to commands capable of affecting everyone else.

From an IT perspective, this is where I want to know what the command changes, how far it reaches, and whether there’s a usable backup. Those questions become much less enjoyable after somebody says, “So, funny story about the server.”

Thankfully, this one had a recovery option. But I’d probably read the next command twice before introducing it to anything I’d spent weeks collecting.
