I understand why my computer needs an update. I’m less clear on why my leftovers should be involved.
This week on LagginOut, we talked about a Samsung firmware mishap in South Korea. According to the report covered, an internal test update reached some customers’ smart refrigerators and interfered with cooling, lights, and other functions. It happened just before a major holiday in South Korea, Chuseok, when families were preparing. Great timing if your goal was to turn dinner prep into a support ticket.
The panel had different tolerances for smart appliances. A notification that the laundry is done? Sure. A reminder that the fridge door is open? I can see the appeal. But as Hiro pointed out, and I naturally agreed, connecting an appliance adds another way for something to go wrong. In this case, the part that went wrong was the part everyone bought the fridge for.
That led to a discussion about how updates get tested and released. Chieftain brought up “soak testing” from his game development days, where you leave a build running long enough for problems to show up. The crew also landed on a familiar rule about pushing updates right before a weekend. I’d extend that to any occasion that involves a fridge full of food and relatives on the way.
I’m fine with a fridge that tells me I left the door open. I’d just like the thing to stay cold once I close it.
